Zadanie 3 (60min.)

  • Read the text. Are the statements true (T) or false (F)?

Singing in the rain

You wake up in the morning and there’s snow on the ground, but on the walk to school the sun comes out and it feels like summer. You go outside at lunchtime because it’s still sunny, but you get caught in a thunderstorm. On your way home, it’s so hot that you have to take off your jumper. Does it sound familiar? If it does, then you probably live in the UK.

The weather in the UK is unpredictable, and this is partly because of the location of the British Isles. Cold polar air from the north and warmer air from the Tropics, brought by the Gulf Stream, push against each other to create the UK's changeable weather patterns.

This means that weather forecasting in the UK is a difficult job, and the people who do it can have embarrassing moments. For example, in 1987, weather forecasters missed a huge storm that was coming towards the UK. There was no mention of the storm during the daytime weather forecast, but later that night, a place called Sevenoaks near London lost six of its seven famous oak trees when the strong wind blew them down.

These days, UK weather forecasters usually know about extreme weather that is about to hit the country, and they also try not to make unrealistic predictions about the weather. For example, they don’t say that there’s going to be a ‘barbecue summer’ (a very hot summer when people can cook outside all the time) or a freezing winter, because usually the opposite happens. They now only forecast a maximum of five days, and people don’t even trust that – they check regularly to see if a forecast is still correct.

You may think that living with this sort of weather every day makes people unhappy, but actually it has an unexpected effect on a lot of people in the UK. They tend to get more excited by sunshine than most people. They are likely to change into summer clothes whenever they see the sun, whether it is August or December. They don’t mind the rain and they’re always prepared for it, with their waterproof coats, boots and umbrellas ready by the front door. They also know how to have a good time despite the weather. Rainy summers are so common that people try not to let the weather spoil their fun. In fact, for some people, particularly young children, the rain can be fun, and you may even find them singing in the rain!

1          The UK’s position causes changes in the weather.                          ___

2          In 1987, forecasters warned people about a storm.                           ___

3          In the storm, Sevenoaks lost most of its famous trees.                                 ___

4          UK weather forecasters make promises about the weather.             ___

5          The writer says people in the UK expect rain in the summer.                      ___

Zadanie 1 (60min.)

Read the text. Choose the correct answers.

Do you want to be on TV or in a film? Well, if you do, then why not become an extra? Extras play a very small part in a film or TV programme. They don’t usually speak. However, they may have to walk across the set or stand with other extras as part of a crowd.

There are many agencies that are always looking for extras and some of them are online, so it’s easy to apply wherever you live. You usually just need to fill in an application form and send in some photos. TV and film directors often want extras who have a particular look. For example, they may want women with long hair for period dramas and people who look a bit scary for horror films, so try to think about the kind of programme that you’d like to be in when you’re choosing which photos to send.

So imagine you get a call to say a director wants you in their next film. You’re really excited, but what happens next? Well, don’t be anxious about how you’ll look on screen, as the company will do lots of work on you when you arrive on the set. You might have to wear your own clothes, but don’t worry about your hair and make-up as there will be staff to make you look perfect for the role.

Now, although it all sounds really exciting, be prepared to sit around for a lot of the day, waiting until you are needed for your scene. The time can go very slowly if you don’t have anything to do, so it’s a good idea to take a book with you on any job that you get. Take some food and drink, too – you’ll probably get lunch, but remember it’ll be a long day!

Most extras can earn about £90 to £110 a day. This isn’t very good for the number of hours that you need to be available, but for the actual work that you do, it’s OK. However, people usually become an extra for the chance to be on the big screen rather than for the money. Some people hope that it may lead to a real acting part. This doesn’t happen very often, but there are some stories of extras becoming famous because a director saw them on a film set. However, even if you continue to just be an extra, you might get to see one of your favourite Hollywood actors one day, and it will definitely be something to tell all your friends about!

1) What is the best title for the article?

a) What to expect as a film and TV extra

b) My life as a film and TV extra

c) From TV extra to film star

2)The writer suggests that you will get an ‘extra’ job if

a) you have the right clothes.

b) you are in the right place.

c) your appearance is right.

3) The writer says that if you get a part, you may need to

a) do something with your hair.

b) find something to wear.

c) practise doing your make-up.

4) What does the writer think is a benefit of being an extra?

a) You can meet famous actors.

b) You will get noticed by the film director.

c) You might get jobs for your friends.

5) What does the writer think about the job of an extra?

a) It is very popular with actors.

b) It can be a bit boring.

c) It is always well paid.

Zadanie 2 (60min.)

1) Read the definitions of films and TV programmes and write the correct words.

  1. I watch this every day to find out what’s happening in the world. __________________
  2. I don’t really like this type of film because the actors are always singing. __________________
  3. I like this type of programme, especially if I know the answers to the questions. __________________
  4. In this type of film, a man and a woman meet, and after some problems they fall in love at the end. _____
  5. This is a film about events from the past; the actors always wear beautiful costumes._________________
  6. In this programme, real people perform a special skill and the audience chooses the winner. __________

2) Complete the sentences with the correct words. The first and last letter of each word has been given.

  1. I think thrillers are g_ _ _ _ _ _g – you never know what’s going to happen next!
  2. Science fiction films usually have a lot of s_ _ _ _ _ _ e_ _ _ _ _s to make you believe you’re in a different world.
  3. It doesn’t matter what kind of film it is – if the acting is c_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _g, I usually love it.

Zadanie 2: Przeczytaj poniższy tekst i odpowiedz na pytania 2 pytania zostały podane dodatkowo tzn. nie ma informacji na ich temat w  żadnym paragrafie

The most dangerous journey

A         How do you feel about car journeys? Do you get a bit bored, ask the driver how long it’s going to take, and then fall asleep? Or do you get extremely anxious? This is exactly how I felt last month, when I took a trip down the most dangerous road in the world.

B         The North Yungas road in Bolivia goes from La Paz, which is a very large city to the town of Coroico in the mountain region of the Amazon rainforest. The road is about 69 km long, but in that short distance it goes down from about 4,650 m high to 1,200 m. Although it is only about three metres wide and there are no guard rails, cars travel in both directions. The views are amazing, but between two and three hundred travellers are killed every year when they drive off the side of this road. In Spanish it is called El Camino de los Muertos – the Road of the Dead.

C         When I went to visit my friend Jacqueline in La Paz, I had no idea how dangerous the North Yungas road was. I was very excited about the trip to the Amazon rainforest that she wanted to take me on. When we got on the bus, Jacqueline let me sit by the window to get the best view. I didn’t feel suspicious at all.

D         It was only when the journey started that I began to feel frightened. The bus drove right to the edge of the road many times, and when I looked over, I could see the forest about 600 m below us. We drove on quickly through thick cloud – how do you know where you’re going when you can’t see? I held on to Jacqueline’s hand. Then we drove under a waterfall that was slowly washing the road away. I was shocked!

E         When we met another car coming the other way, we drove so close to the edge of the road that a wheel seemed to go off the edge. This happened several times and I started thinking that we might not reach our final destination. When we finally got to Coroico, I felt so relieved. I let go of Jacqueline’s hand and saw that it was red. I was a bit embarrassed, but so happy that we were not on that road any more.

In which paragraph does the writer tell us ...

  • how many people die on the road?             ___
  • about feelings people have when they travel? ___
  • about an injury that she had?                         ___
  • about dangerous weather?             ___
  • that someone wanted her to see the sights?             ___
  • how expensive the trip was?             ___
  • that she thought she might die?             ___

We were all eating ice cream when I made strange noises and fell forward onto my plate.

This was not some unusual way of teaching the children about crime, but a murder mystery game. It was a bit like a play in the theatre, but the whole school was involved. All of the teachers were either victims or suspects and all of the children were detectives trying to find out who the murderer was. The children knew the situation was serious as many teachers were ‘dying’, so they were all very excited!

Lying next to my ice cream, I loved being a ‘victim’. However, I had to remember not to smile as the teachers dragged me across the floor to get rid of my ‘dead body’ so the students knew I was really ‘dead’. This was just the start of my murder mystery career!

Soon after that, one of my friends bought a murder mystery game and invited me and several other friends to a dinner party. We all had to dress up as different characters. The story was that one of our close friends had been murdered and we were all suspects. We had to tell the other characters important information and question people about the information they gave. Then, at the end of the evening, we tried to work out who had done it. I wasn’t very good at the police investigation part, but I loved playing a part and the excitement of knowing that one of the people in the room was a ‘murderer’.

Now I run my own company – Murder Mystery Occasions. I organise murder mystery parties in restaurants or historic buildings. Usually I hire a private room so that the ‘murder’ doesn’t upset other guests. Castles are particularly popular with my guests because they’re so atmospheric, so I use them if they’re available. I write the scripts and employ actors to be some of the key characters. People pay to come along and join in with the fun while having a wonderful dinner. The murder usually happens somewhere between the starter and the main course and there is always a lot of excitement when the police arrive to take fingerprints and interview key suspects. People tell me that’s the best part. Then, at the end of the evening, there is a prize for the table that guesses who is the murderer, but everybody who comes along seems to enjoy the drama. So, you could say I’ve made a good, honest career out of murder!

Mountain climbing is a dangerous sport and people injure themselves – or die – from falls every year. But have you heard of a ‘free solo’ climb? This means that you climb up a mountain on your own without any equipment to help you. That means no ropes or hard hat; you only use your own muscles.

Alex Honnold is a Canadian climber and he has already done free solo climbs up some of the world’s hardest mountains. In 2017, he tried to climb El Capitan in the USA, a mountain that is nearly 1,000 metres high. It is nearly all rock and is more like a cliff than a mountain. It usually takes climbers many days to climb it using state-of-the-art equipment. Without any equipment, you need to have very strong arms, shoulders and legs, you need to be very flexible, and you need to be brave! The weather could be very hot or very windy. You might frighten birds or bees, and rocks will probably fall on your way up.

Alex practised climbing the mountain many times with ropes first. This wasn’t easy. He fell on one practice climb and sprained his ankle badly. He needed a lot of painkillers afterwards. And practising is very important. If you watch Alex exercising, you will see him doing some unusual things. He stands with his foot in the air; then he crouches down and jumps. He lifts his body using his fingers. His fingers need to be very strong to help him when he climbs along rocks with very little to hold onto.

On 3 June 2017, Alex started to climb El Capitan very early in the morning. Many people were watching him, some with cameras. The people all felt very anxious. ‘If Alex falls, he will die,’ they thought. Did he feel the same fear that they did? It was impossible to know. Amazingly, he completed the climb in just four hours.

Will Alex stop climbing now? The answer is probably no. There are many more mountains that he wants to climb without equipment before he finally retires.

1) People who do a free solo climb

A)use state-of-the-art equipment.

B) use only ropes and a hard hat.

C) use only their fingers.

D) do not use any climbing equipment.

2) The Canadian Alex Honnold

A) first did a solo climb in 2017.

B) died in a climb in 2017.

C) has climbed many difficult mountains.

D) took many days to climb El Capitan.

3) Which of the following is not a problem on El Capitan?

A) Insects

B) the weather

C) falling rocks

D) other climbers

4) Why did Alex need to take painkillers?

A) He was very anxious about the climb.

B) He hurt his ankle during a climb.

C) He hurt his fingers during a climb.

D) He had to stand with his foot in the air.

5) The writer thinks that before he retires, Alex

A) will have climbed more mountains.

B) will stop climbing mountains.

C) will do some unusual things.

D) will start using equipment.

Kayaker fakes his own death

In March 2002, John Darwin paddled his red kayak into the North Sea off the coast of England and faked his own death. At the time, John’s business was doing badly and he was in serious financial trouble. He wanted the world to think he had died in a kayaking accident. With the insurance money for his death, he planned to go abroad with his wife and start a new life.

Five lifeboats, a police plane, a rescue helicopter and large teams of police officers tried to find him. Not surprisingly, they never found a body. John’s broken kayak appeared a few months later.

Many people were shocked that John and his wife Anne hid the truth from their two sons. Anne told her sons and the rest of the world that her husband had died, while John lived secretly in a small flat next to the family home.

Two years after the ‘accident’, John and Anne flew to Panama in Central America to start a new life with the £680,000 life insurance money. However, in 2007, Darwin returned to Britain and walked into a London police station. He told police that he couldn’t remember anything about the last five years. His wife Anne said she was delighted to learn that her husband was still alive. This time the police launched a different kind of investigation.

Then a photograph of John and Anne in Panama appeared on the internet. Someone had taken the picture two years before! The police started to find out the truth. John had used a fake passport to travel in and out of Britain while the couple spent the insurance money. Although the Darwins’ sons said that they hadn’t known anything about it, the police thought they were lying. However, John and Anne both insisted that their sons hadn’t known the truth. Their sons couldn’t believe that their mother had lied to them about their father’s death. Later, John and Anne both went to prison for six years. People had found out the truth, their marriage was over and the money had gone.

Ethical shopping

What does ‘ethical shopping’ mean? It means buying products that don’t damage the environment. It means paying the people who make the products fairly. The products you buy have an effect on other people and the environment. Do you ever stop and think about that? 1_____ How much money do they earn? Where has the meat in your burger come from? Are your electronic devices bad for the environment? Ethical shopping means that you have to ask yourself these questions and think carefully about the answers.

The way we spend our money can change the world. Businesses want to make money and shoppers have the power to tell them what they want and why. 2_____

Most people care about the environment and want to live an eco-friendly life. 3_____ This oil comes from a tree, the oil palm. It is in about 50% of all products in the supermarket, including biscuits, cookies, cakes, chocolate, cosmetics, toothpaste, soap and shampoo. As a result, huge areas of rainforests in South-East Asia are destroyed each year so people can grow oil palms.

The problem is that this causes a lot of environmental damage. Burning the rainforest to clear the land for oil palms gives off greenhouse gases and these contribute to global warming. When we destroy the rainforest, we also destroy the natural habitat of wild animals like the Sumatran tiger and the orangutan. 4_____ We made biscuits, shampoo, soap and chocolate in the past without palm oil. We can do it again in the future.

Ethical shopping doesn’t mean we have to give up the products we like. 5_____

Ethical shopping means buying better alternatives. A lot of companies make ethical products; you just have to find them.

  1. If we don’t buy products that contain palm oil, we can help to save the rainforests and the animals that live there.
  2. What other companies use palm oil to make their products?
  3. We can still buy good quality food, clothes, cosmetics or electronic devices.
  4. If shoppers told them to change a product, they would do it.
  5. The world would be a fairer place if people spent their money more carefully.
  6. However, many products contain ingredients that aren’t eco-friendly, such as palm oil.
  7. What about the people who make your low-price jeans?

The weather forecast predicts what the temperature and air conditions will be in the near future. There is a wide variety of types of weather. The weather can be sunny or stormy. It can be warm or cool. It also can be rainy, cloudy or windy. Sometimes, weather is severe. A blizzard, a thunderstorm or a hurricane may happen quickly. When we get information ahead of time, we can prepare for it. Being prepared helps us stay safe.

A meteorologist is a person whose job it is to forecast the weather. There are many tools available to help the meteorologist do his job. A common tool for getting an accurate measurement of the temperature is a thermometer. A high temperature probably means plenty of sunshine for everyone.

In rainy weather, a meteorologist uses a rain gauge. A rain gauge gives numerical data about how much rain is falling outdoors. After it rains, you may be able to see a rainbow. A rainbow appears when the sun comes out and there is still rain in the air.

Wind brings us weather. It blows clouds from one place to another. It is helpful to know which direction the wind is blowing. A wind vane provides this information. Knowing the wind direction helps a meteorologist know what weather is coming.

Weather forecasts are not always right. As our knowledge about weather gets better, the forecasts become more accurate.

Answer the following questions based on the reading passage. Don’t forget to go back to the passage whenever necessary to find or confirm your answers. Actual wording of answers may vary.

 1) What is a weather forecast?

2) What is a person whose job it is to forecast the weather called?

3) Name one weather tool and tell what it is used for.

4) What is your favorite kind of weather?

5) Do you think the job of a meteorologist is diffi cult or easy? Explain your thinking.

Can the school you go to make a massive difference to your life? This is the question that a TV company wanted to answer, so they ran an experiment. They paid for a 14-year-old boy who constantly got into trouble and was thrown out of his South London school to go to an exclusive L15,000 a year boarding school. The experiment was a second chance for 14-year-old Ryan Bell. He had never had the opportunities that his new classmates at Downside School had. When he was asked if he might have trouble getting used to a ‘smart and posh’ new school, he simply said, "Don’t worry about me looking like a person with no friends, all 14-year-old guys are the same – we like cars and girls! I’m certain I won’t have any problems." Ryan’s first year at his new school was a definite success. He was coming top in Latin and got into the rugby team, where he was one of the best. His mother was really proud – she hoped her son would never have the problems with money she had. His father had left them both when Ryan was a baby. His mother had always done her best, but admitted she couldn’t give Ryan the best start in life. Now Ryan started talking about going to university and a possible career as a TV director. At his old school, Ryan’s teachers used to say he was always causing problems but at his new school Ryan got on very well with the other students. His teachers said he would get through his GCSE exams easily. There were a few small problems, but at first they weren’t considered too serious. The first one was when Ryan returned home for the holidays and was caught doing graffiti. It was bad, but the school blamed his friends at home for encouraging him to do it and said it would be unfair to expect Ryan to ‘transform overnight’. They were less tolerant of the second incident – Ryan took another boy’s mobile phone and even though it was apparently a joke, he was not allowed to attend school for a week. After returning to the school which he was enjoying being part of, Ryan went into the nearest town one evening with some of his friends. At the local disco he lost his temper and hit another boy in the face. The incident reflected badly on the school’s reputation as the police were called. Because Ryan had already been in trouble and the regulations were the same for everyone, he had to be thrown out of school. This decision was cruel, though the teachers believed his aggression and wrongdoings were caused by his previous experiences. Everyone agrees that Ryan was doing very well and even though he failed to complete his education at Downside School, he progressed a long way educationally and emotionally.
Adapted from: Club, Nov/Dec 2003
