Zadanie 4. (0–4)

Przeczytaj wypowiedź pewnego muzyka. Dobierz właściwy nagłówek (A–F) do każdej z oznaczonych części tekstu (4.1.–4.4.). Wpisz odpowiednią literę w każdą kratkę. Uwaga: dwa nagłówki zostały podane dodatkowo i nie pasują do żadnej części tekstu.

  1. Sources of inspiration.
  2. Some things don't change that much.
  3. Music can make a difference.
  4. Reasons behind breakup.
  5. Chances for reunion.
  6. Recipe for timeless popularity.

4.1.

There are songs, like ours, that people never tire of, songs that after decades still sound fresh. Why? Possibly, because we worked really hard on the songwriting and the production process. Another secret might be the heart and soul that went into these songs. Maybe the formula for success is simply the combination of these ingredients?

4.2.

When we were starting up pop ruled the charts, but was replaced by harder sounds. When we split up in the 1980s, pop wasn't cool anymore. It was the time of rock, punk and metal. But then boy bands like Backstreet Boys stormed the charts and pop made a huge comeback. It's slightly different but it's hot again, and so are our songs. It's like we've come full circle.

4.3.

At the beginning I thought it was stupid to get involved in politics. It takes the focus away from the music. But on the other hand, if you look at U2, you see they have a deeper reason for doing it. It's not about power. Such artists actually change the world. If my band had been together at the time of Live Aid, we would gladly have taken part in it.

4.4.

Getting back together today would be like starting a new band. We've been apart for too long, we've all gone our separate ways, in terms of music and life choices. We don't have any common inspiration anymore. I'm afraid it would be kind of pathetic. People want to remember us as we were back then; let them have these memories.

Dear Martha,

How are you? I'm great! Remember how I wanted to do something for myself? Well, I've finally decided to do it! I tried jogging because you don't need any equipment, but getting up one hour earlier to pointlessly run in circles was as exciting as a tooth extraction, so I quit after a week. Remember Sharon? She'd been telling me about yoga for a couple of months, so I'm giving it a try and loving it. It relaxes me, takes my mind off things, and I can already tell I'm getting a bit more flexible. Of course, I couldn't join her group because the way these people bend and stretch is just beyond me. But there's this gym around the corner where they have classes for beginners.

5.3. The author of the letter

  1. joined the yoga group Sharon recommended.
  2. thought running was exciting but too exhausting.
  3. wasn't flexible enough to exercise with her friend.

Tyler Armstrong is 9 years old and he has managed to climb all the way to the top of Argentina’s Aconcagua mountain. Aconcagua, rising to 6,962 m above sea level, is the tallest mountain in both American continents. Each year more than 7 thousand people try to beat its bitter winter climate and only about 2 thousand manage to get to the top. In fact, the climb is so difficult that over 200 people have lost their lives trying to reach Aconcagua’s summit and you need a permit to be allowed to attempt it. Normally, such permits are not issued to people under 15, so Tyler’s parents had to convince the judge to make an exception to the regulations. But then Tyler – a fourth-grader from Yorba Linda in southern California – is not an ordinary teenager. Mountain climbing has been his passion since the early age of four, and by the time he was eight, he’d climbed the highest mountain in Africa – Kilimanjaro. Before his trip to Argentina, Tyler spent a year and a half working out to prepare his body and fundraising to get the necessary money, some of which he donated to charity. Proving himself to be a mature and responsible young man, he was then able to obtain his permit and make the climb. Naturally, he didn’t do it alone. He was accompanied by his father, Kevin, who is an emergency medical technician. Many people think Tyler’s father made him do it, but in fact it was the other way around. Armstrong says he was never really into mountaineering but he wanted to experience it with his son. And, of course, Tyler’s mother wanted him to keep an eye on their son. The two hired an experienced Tibetan mountaineer, who has climbed Everest many times, to guide them up the mountain. They reached the summit on Christmas Eve after a few days of exhausting climbing. They said there were some weak moments along the way but they never gave up. This feat makes Tyler the youngest person to climb Aconcagua. And he doesn't want to stop there. He intends to reach all “seven summits”, the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. His motivation is to support research to find a cure for the muscle disease called Duchenne, which affects one in 3,500 boys. Tyler hopes to raise $1 for every step he climbs. Next on his list is North America’s tallest peak, mount McKinley. However, unless Tyler can find a sponsor, this will have to wait as the Armstrongs have spent all their savings on this expedition and are basically broke.

In the last half-century, hundreds of animal species in the US have been saved from dying out. 7.1.______ It is all thanks to the Endangered Species Act signed by President Nixon in 1973. Mo was waiting in the corridor outside her class. She was feeling sick. She always felt sick in exam week. She had two exams that day and physics was first. She really hated physics. Terry looked back at her from the front of the line, then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything...  Little Miss Perfect!

“Hi, Mo, it’s your favourite exam today” said Nima, laughing as she joined the line. Terry was looking at Mo again. “So what’s wrong with her?” asked Nima. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Mo. “but she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me revise for the physics exam too, but then she ignored all my calls and texts. And when I rang her house, her mum just told me she was too busy.” said Mo angrily. “Are you listening to me Maureen Quinn?” Mr Reed was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. Mo gave Nima a worried look and followed them.

Mo couldn’t answer question number five, it was too difficult. She looked up and saw Terry sitting two rows in front of her. Mo couldn’t believe it! Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. It wasn’t fair!

Mo was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam that afternoon, but she hadn’t seen Terry take her phone out. Maybe she didn’t need to cheat at history. She was working on the last question, when she saw that Terry had her phone under the table. Without thinking, Mo looked up and nodded to Mr Reed. Mr Reed didn’t say anything. He just picked up Terry’s exam paper, tore it in half and pointed to the door, to tell her to leave the room.

Mo was walking towards the school gate, when she heard footsteps behind her. It was Terry. “Mo, please wait!” she called as she ran up to her. “I want to talk to you.” said Terry. “I’m really sorry I haven’t answered any of your calls but we’re having a terrible time at home. My dad is in hospital. He had an operation today and I was very worried about him. I was reading texts from my mum to see how the operation was going, but Mr Reed caught me with my phone. He thought I was cheating. He believes me now, but I have to take the exam again. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you what was happening. I haven’t forgotten that you’re a good friend. Will you forgive me?”

DRINKING COFFEE IN ITALY

Coffee is an integral part of Italian culture and since arriving here over six months ago, I have definitely drunk a lot of it! Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK but coffee culture in Italy is a completely different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a café or bar, you are given a tiny, bitter espresso. 7.1. ________ In addition, while takeaway coffee is extremely popular among Brits, it’s not very common at all in Italy, especially in non-touristy areas. Generally, Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees whilst standing at the bar and, for many, this short break is an important part of their day. Typically, breakfast in a bar in Italy involves a coffee and a pastry. 7.2. ________ It’s such a nice idea to head to a bar to grab a coffee and something sweet for breakfast before my work starts! Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy is much cheaper than coffee in the UK. 7.3. ________ This means that in Italy it is possible to go out for coffee regularly without breaking the bank.

  1. Normally, an espresso or a macchiato (an espresso with a drop of milk) costs around a euro and a cappuccino about €1.50!
  2. It’s also a very popular sight to see an Italian walking down the street with a paper cup full of delicious cappuccino.
  3. Cappuccinos are very popular at that time and, for me, a creamy cappuccino and a sweetbbun is the perfect way to start the day.
  4. But I’m not keen on that at all. I think it’s better to drink coffee during the lunch break or after work, when you’re very tired and need some energy.
  5. This is ‘normal coffee’ for Italians and they are not so keen on the huge coffees that we drink in the UK.

KICKSTARTER

Journalist: Last week, I met Maria Gonzales who has recently started her own business using Kickstarter. My first question to her was: What exactly is Kickstarter?

Maria: It’s a new idea to help small businesses to raise money. It uses an idea called ‘crowd funding’.

Journalist: What is that?

Maria: It means, simply, asking the public for help. The people who ‘invest’ in the business don’t do it in the hope offuture profits. 6.1. ______ In return, they may receive a small gift or even, in some cases, just thanks. I love painting so I sent everyone who invested a piece of art.

Journalist: Brilliant. So, how do they send the money?

Maria: Through Kickstarter. Kickstarter takes 5% of all money received. Amazon then takes another 3–5% for organising payments. 6.2. ______

Journalist: So, are there any problems with Kickstarter?

Maria: For the companies, no. For investors, there is one major problem. The thing everyone asked me about was what would happen to their money. 6.3. ______ They would have to trust me. Kickstarter itself doesn’t keep a check on things. Despite this, a lot of people invested in my company and I have tried to keep them informed at all times. It’s a wonderful idea. I have money for my business but no debts.
